I have used the mittens for several outdoor activities and wanted to share my thoughts:

WARMTH:
Incredibly warm. Rivals expensive outdoor gear company's gloves/mittens. Warm and toasty hands summitting 4000+ foot mountain peaks in winter with with wind chills around 0*. Also hands were not cold with the mittens setting ice fishing rigs around -15/-20*. For less active events, such as outside watching sporting events during cold/windy winter days, these kept my hands very comfortable.

DESIGN:
Having the ability to fold back mitten and use the the gloved fingers is huge. Many tasks/jobs require some dexterity and gripping so seemingly essential to be able to have intricate motion when needed, but the extra insulation too. I do wish the thumb also had a gloved finger available. For some things, it was difficult to grip to use my hand with gloved fingers, but a bulky thumb making intricate tasks somewhat challenging. For me, that was a disappointment, but more of an annoyance than a functionally limiting factor. While I didn't use the hand warmer pocket, its a nice touch to have!

FUNCTIONALITY:
Definitely have a wide array of uses. In fact, just about anything. From outdoor activities like hiking, skiing, snowshoeing, etc to having a warm pair of mittens for commuting, walking, snow shoveling, snow blowing, working around the house, etc. these can fit the bill. The lack of gloved thumb makes some intricate tasks a bit more difficult, but overall extremely functional. I can't speak to the water resistance, as I haven't used yet in cold rain or blizzard, but seem like they would hold up decently. I did use them winter hiking so for spending hours walking over and through snow, my hands didn't feel wet from water seeping in.

OVERALL:
Strongly recommend. Especially being a lower price point than the big name outdoor gear companies. Having the accessible thumb would make it perfect!
